Dear Amb. Robert Keeley
The appointment of Senator George Mitchell as President Obama’s Middle East Special envoy provides the pro-peace, pro-justice constituency with an opportunity to help shape a U.S. approach to Palestinian and Israeli peacemaking that is based on freedom, equality and security for all.
Arabs, Israelis and Americans all have a stake in assuring that a new, credible and honest U.S. foreign policy is crafted; one that restores America’s leadership position around the world and is based on America’s greatest values and might, justice and freedom.
It is my hope that you join us in our effort to provide Senator Mitchell and President Obama with some guidelines on the best way to achieve peace, stability and security for Palestinians and Israelis. Attached is a document that outlines two options for an end-to-conflict agreement and the necessary requirements for achieving either option.
Your endorsement of the attached document, and that of your colleagues, members of Congress, academics, professionals and others will provide Senator Mitchell with a safety net of support needed to proceed with the difficult task he has been assigned.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you by Friday, March 20, 2009.
Regards,
James Abourezk
Former Democratic Senator, South Dakota
