A Sound-Bite Culture
To the Editor:
Re “Bring the Real World Home,” by Roger Cohen (column, Nov. 12):
I am an American living in Greece, where I receive CNN International and BBC World by satellite, yet my main television news source is Al Jazeera English. It is wonderfully balanced and seems to cover the entire world more completely with more hard news and more depth than the others.
It makes me sad when my fellow Americans in the States complain to me that their news programming is more like entertainment than hard news. If an informed electorate is necessary to a vibrant democracy, it’s no wonder that Americans are so easily led by sound bites and make such important decisions based on so little information.
