It seems very clear now that the "new strategy" for Iraq will meet our
most dreaded expectations.
In a tragically ironic way, I'm beginning to think that the ISG
recommendations will be seen in retrospect to have done more harm than
good. Although not without important shortcomings, the ISG report
defined some very well-reasoned and sensible options that might have
been thoughtfully considered and even implemented by Bush policy makers
---- if they had not been contaminated by their ISG authorship --- the
kiss of death in the eyes of people who are incapable of recognizing any
merit in what their ideological adversaries recommend. "Tragedy" really
is the operative word.
