Ah Newtie, We Hardly Knew Ye

By GAIL COLLINS

Newt Gingrich isn’t running!

The former House speaker, who once shut down the federal government
because Bill Clinton gave him a bad seat on Air Force One, has decided
that his extremely promising candidacy for the Republican presidential
nomination will have to be nipped in the bud due to the tyranny of
campaign finance reform.

“The McCain-Feingold Act criminalizes politics,” he growled to George
Stephanopoulos, launching into an explanation about how the law would
have cruelly required him to sever his ties with a political advocacy
group in order to run for the most powerful job on the planet.

Who said campaign finance reform wouldn’t accomplish anything?

It was obviously excessive, it was obviously wrong," said the U.S. military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the incident remains the subject of several investigations. "The civilians that were fired upon, they didn't have any weapons to fire back at them. And none of the IP or any of the local security forces fired back at them," he added, using a military abbreviation for the Iraqi police. The Blackwater guards appeared to have fired grenade launchers in addition to machine guns, the official said.

BAGHDAD, Oct. 4 -- U.S. military reports from the scene of the Sept. 16 shooting incident involving the security firm Blackwater USA indicate that its guards opened fire without provocation and used excessive force against Iraqi civilians, according to a senior U.S. military official.

The reports came to light as an Interior Ministry official and five eyewitnesses described a second deadly shooting minutes after the incident in Nisoor Square. The same Blackwater security guards, after driving about 150 yards away from the square, fired into a crush of cars, killing one person and injuring two, the Iraqi official said.

Democratic lawmakers assailed the Justice Department yesterday for issuing secret memos that authorized harsh CIA interrogation techniques, demanding that the Bush administration turn over the documents. But officials refused and said the tactics did not violate anti-torture laws.

One opinion issued by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel in May 2005 authorized a combination of painful physical and psychological interrogation tactics, including head slapping, frigid temperatures and simulated drowning, according to current and former officials familiar with the issue.

ROCK OF AGES///R CRUMB’S LOST PSYCHEDELIC MASTERPIECE…

crumb-cat-main.jpg

Underground comix legend R CRUMB still churns out incredible work at breakneck speed but few of his modern images are as compelling as his incomparable vintage work. Case in point: This phenomenal faux rock poster Crumb created in 1967 as a sort of “calling card” to drum up work on the local San Francisco psychedelic concert circuit, particularly with the legendary (and late) CHET HELMS who hosted epic rock shows at the AVALON BALLROOM. As a tongue-in-cheek homage to Helms’ FAMILY DOG production company, Crumb created this piece promoting a show called the “Cat’s Meow” featuring the fictional lineup of  Fess Williams, The Royal Flush Orchestra, Butterbeans & Susie, The Midnight Airdales, and Pegleg Howell & His Gang, all scheduled to appear at The Avalon for a three nite run (customary in the day) from May 9th—11th in the real summer of love. Hidden away in private collections for years, this may be the first time this piece (painted on a board approximating the size of a Family Dog poster) has been publicly exposed and one can only imagine a young R Crumb showing it around to Helms and Bill Graham only to be passed over in favor of more established psychedelic artists like Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse who ruled the circuit. Two leading U.S. peace activists were denied entry into Canada on Wednesday after their names appeared on an FBI criminal database that the Canadian government is using at its borders. Ann Wright, a retired Army colonel and former diplomat, and Medea Benjamin, co-founder of women’s peace group CODEPINK, were headed to Toronto to appear at an antiwar event. We speak to Ann Wright about her entry denial and its implications on civil liberties. [includes rush transcript]

Two leading U.S. peace activists were denied entry into Canada on Wednesday after their names appeared on an FBI criminal database that the Canadian government is using at its borders. Ann Wright, a retired Army colonel and former diplomat, and Medea Benjamin, co-founder of women’s peace group CODEPINK, were headed to Toronto to discuss peace and security issues at the invitation of the Toronto Stop the War Coalition. Canadian authorities detained and questioned them for several hours at the border crossing between Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

The two women were apparently denied entry into Canada because their names appeared on an FBI-run international criminal database. Ann Wright and Medea Benjamin do have nine convictions between them, but all involving civil disobedience committed while protesting the war in Iraq.

On Thursday, they met with immigration officials at the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C. and held a news conference outside. Ann Wright joins me now from Washington. She is a retired Army colonel and former diplomat who quit a 16-year State Department career following the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

The State Department will step up its monitoring of Blackwater security operations in Iraq, including placing its own agents in Blackwater convoys, mounting video cameras in security vehicles and recording all radio transmissions, the department announced today.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ordered the actions in response to an initial assessment of Blackwater operations by a high-level team she has sent to Iraq to review overall security operations there.

The team, headed by Patrick Kennedy, the senior management officer for the State Department, is reviewing the rules for contractor operations, the extent to which Blackwater and other private security companies abide by them, and whether there should be wholesale changes in the security system.

R. Crumb for Supreme

R. Crumb for Supreme

http://www.supremenewyork.com/news/364

Robert Dennis Crumb is an American artist and illustrator recognized for the distinctive style of his drawings and his critical, satirical and subversive view of the American mainstream.

In 1968, R. Crumb self-published the first issue of Zap Comix and its success quickly established Crumb as the best-known artist of the underground comics movement.

Crumb's artwork references details commonly found in early 20th-century cartoon styles. However, his stories are frequently satirical, sexual and politically outrageous.

In the pages of Zap, the East Village Other, OZ, Motor City, Yellow Dog and scores of other comics, Crumb created characters that soon became symbols of a subculture: Mr. Natural, Angelfood McSpade, Flakey Foont, and Crumb's Fritz the Cat, have all become widely known cult icons. For over three decades, R. Crumb has shocked, entertained and challenged the imaginations (and the inhibitions) of comic fans all over the world.

Supreme produced a series of two t-shirts and a zip-up hoodie incorporating the artwork of R. Crumb.

Murakami & Mr. for Supreme

World-renowned Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami, was born in Tokyo in 1962.

By proposing the concept of “Superflat”, he interprets modern Japanese culture in a state where the line between high and low culture has been melted. As an artist, Murakami questions the relationship between East and West, past and present, fine art, pop culture and mass media.

In 1996, Murakami founded the Hiropon Factory in order to produce large scale art works with his group of assistants and in 2001 it evolved into KaiKai Kiki. With bases in Tokyo, Saitama, and New York, Kaikai Kiki is a pioneering organization which aims to broaden the horizons and parameters of Japanese contemporary art.

One of Murakami’s most loyal assistants, also known as Mr., born in Cupa in 1969, has a body of work that thrives on the “otaku” culture of Japan. Mr. adopted his name from the national baseball superstar Shigeo Nagashima’s alias “Mister”.

His work often portrays cute cartoon characters in a highly sexual context and embodies the Lolita-esque fascination with young children which are commonplace in Japanese comics.

Supreme will release a series of limited edition skateboard decks designed by artists Takashi Murakami and Mr. The series will consist of three decks designed by each artist.

They will be available exclusively through the six Supreme stores (New York, Los Angeles and four locations throughout Japan) and selected retail accounts.

On September 20th, the skate decks will also be available in our new online shop (u.s. only).
