The Ballad of Bushie and Flashy

WASHINGTON

George Bush may have lost his swagger, but Harry Flashman hasn’t.

Maybe the president presiding over a quicksand empire got a vicarious thrill out of the fictional Victorian brigadier general who roamed from Chillianwalla to Isandlwana to Abyssinia at the height of the British Empire, always making conquests in love and war despite his cowardly, caddish behavior.

SHORTLY after Robert and Aline Crumb moved from the United States to a small village in this valley in the South of France, they were asked to participate in a summer medieval festival. For the event local politicians don robes like those once worn by feudal lords, and most of the citizens wear peasant rags.

The Naga Sadhus who descend the Himalayas during the Kumbh Mela are not the same as those worshipped as deities! The former practice cult religions such as Shakta or Naga and are typically known as Sadhus or ascetics. They are detached from life, although not necessarily devoid of its pleasures (like narcotics, sex etc.) The Sadhus practice rituals involving fire, water, yoga, and meditation, and beg for a living, following the lifestyle of  Lord Shiva.

Kumbh Mela is the most sacred of India’s many religious festivals. It occurs at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers at a point of land called the Sangam, near the northern city of Allahabad. It is one of four spots where the god Garuda rested while protecting a pitcher containing the nectar of immortality from pursuing demons. A few drops of the nectar spilled out, and once every 12 years the waters flow with the nectar. Those who bathe in the rivers will be purified of their sins and escape the cycle of death and rebirth.

America’s Iran Strategy (Sick)

America’s Iran Strategy (Sick)

From Gary Sick

It is commonly said that the United States has no Middle East
strategy. That may not be true much longer. The United States has
begun to establish the framework of a new coalition strategy in the
Middle East that could rebuild tattered alliances, shift attention
away from the Iraqi catastrophe, and provide a touchstone for
policymaking that could appeal across party lines.

Musings by Ed Peck

*Look, it's not really all that hard.  If we are really serious
about having Al Maliki, the Prime Minister of a democratically
elected Unity government, carry out his responsibilities, especially
the ones we have publicly assigned him, let's give the guy a chance
to demonstrate his problem-solving skills in an environment with
challeges that are not only far less difficult but also far less
dangerous to our interests.  Oh . . . yeah, and his too.*
