Roq La Rue is very pleased to present a show of work by artists who are influenced by retro animation and design, yet put their own unique spin on it, creating vibrant, playful work.

Mark Frauenfelder unveils a new series of effervescent paintings done in a storybook style mixed with a dash of children’s manga and secret arcane symbolism. Known mainly for his writing and the founding of his uber-popular blog (and former zine) Boing Boing as well as being the editor of Make magazine, Mark is also an accomplished illustrator. This is his first gallery exhibit.

Wednesday Kirwan creates gouache paintings that evoke fairytale themes. For this exhibit she has created a series of paintings depicting mermaid type creatures, as alluringly sweet and strangely eerie as her subject matter has been described to be.

Lynne Nailor and partner Chris Reccardi both come from the animation industry. Lynne designing for “Ren and Stimpy”, “Samurai Jack”,” and “Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!”. Her paintings usually features angular yet voluptuous pin up style gals done in a Barbarella meets Beatnik aesthetic.

Chris Reccardi also hails from “Ren and Stimpy” (as a storyboard artist, animator, writer, director, and composer and performer of the show’s opening theme music!) as apprenticing under such legends as Ralph Bakshi and John Kricfalusi. He also worked on “Powerpuff Girls”, “Samurai Jack”, and Rob Zombie’s upcoming “Haunted World of El Superbeasto.” His work is similar to Lynne’s, mixing a jazzy mod look with retro sci fi style.

Both Lynne and Chris have been working on co-producing and directing their original pilot for Nickelodeon, “The Modifyers”, due for completion in January 2007, but were ready to drop some fantastic paintings off for their Roq la Rue exhibit.

Johnny Yanok mixes current pop culture?with a 60’s Little Golden Book type style. His paintings usually are narrative and humorous and feature an array of characters in each piece.

Mr. Hooper... Milhous (2006, Acrylic on Canvas). From a selection of New Works by Mr. Hooper. "...For years while I was doing comix and graffiti, I operated under several pseudonyms. I never intended to be a painter who operated under a pseudonym. However, I had a teacher in college who addressed everyone by their last name. The parallel between me being Mr. Hooper and the character on Sesame Street (also named Mr. Hooper) was irresistible to my classmates. The nickname stuck with me and I began to sign prints and eventually paintings with Mr. Hooper. My given name is Tim Hooper but you can call me Mr. Hooper - everyone else does."

What Shall We Read To The Children

The Hunt Collection is comprised of approximately 7,000 American and European books for children, dating primarily from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among its many rarities are first editions of several books by E. Boyd Smith (1860-1943), the preeminent American picture-book artist of the generation before the Caldecott Medal was created to honor artists in his field.

Rumsfeld Resigns as Defense Secretary After Big Election Gains for Democrats

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, the hard-driving and super-confident Pentagon boss who came to symbolize President Bush’s controversial Iraq policy, is resigning, President Bush announced today.

Mr. Bush, appearing at the White House the day after the Republican Party suffered sweeping defeats in Tuesday’s midterm elections, said he and Mr. Rumsfeld had had “a series of thoughtful conversations” and agreed that “the time is right for new leadership at the Pentagon.”

Richard Falk: "A Dubious Verdict

A dubious verdict

TO: Distinguished Recipients
FM: John Whitbeck

Transmitted below is a highly pertinent opinion article by Richard Falk,
distinguished professor emeritus of international law at Princeton.

He poses (and, more surprisingly, the International Herald Tribune
publishes) the obvious moral and legal question in the wake of Saddam
Hussein's trial and conviction -- albeit only for what, by Saddam's
standards, was a relatively minor crime, apparently selected by the
American "advisers" to the court because it was the "best" of his crimes
that could be found in which the American government was not itself
complicit or potentially exposed to public embarassment.

That question is: *"Why not Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld?"*
Indeed, on both legal and moral grounds, they (and Tony Blair) are
equally deserving. In a less hypocritical and unjust world, one with
equal rights and responsibilities for all, they too would be brought to
justice and convicted.

Of course, in our imperfect world, this will not happen. However, those
individuals are particularly ill-positioned to gloat over -- and claim
vindication from -- the fate of their fellow war criminal.

The timing of the death sentence imposed on Saddam Hussein, so
suspiciously convenient for Republican aspirations in the U.S. midterm
elections, will only deepen the sectarian tensions in Iraq, fanning
further the flames of civil war.

While President George W. Bush predictably greeted the news as yet
another "milestone" in the effort of the Iraqi people "to replace the
rule of a tyrant with the rule of law," a less partisan reaction would
lament the timing as intensifying sectarian strife in Iraq that has by
now become a civil war intertwined with a war of resistance.

Skype's the Limit

Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis are the geek stars of "disruptive technology." First their file-sharing site, Kazaa, soared from Napster's ashes. Now the Scandinavian team has plans to rewire the planet—wirelessly—with Skype.

Some people don't like change. Change doesn't much care.

But when you're the guys doing the changing, manners still count. Let them down easy. Speak in code, as if a kid were in the room. Refer to the pivotal event as the "Y meeting," and make sure no one is listening in. Have a quick look around the café, where the dark-goggled figures are staring blanks into the light.
