New Mark Ryden painting to be exhibited: "Rosie's Tea Party"
Mark Ryden will exhibit his new painting, "Rosie's Tea Party," at the "Drawn to Expression"
group show running from February 12 to April 23, in the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery
at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena.
Illustration is a malleable term. Norman Rockwell's definition of a perfect illustration — a work of art that tells a story while fulfilling its commercial goal — implies that illustrations are incapable of transcending the story-telling task. Thanks to generations of artists who have challenged this theory, illustrations now have infinite potential to reflect the inner workings of their creators as well as capture and define significant historical moments. The new millennium is one of those moments. Artists in the exhibition Drawn to Expression — all graduates of Art Center's Illustration Department — have further obliterated the narrow definition of illustration by hybridizing artistic styles to create art that can function conceptually either in commercial settings or within a gallery space.
