1982 work, “Hannibal,” which was valued at $100 on a customs declaration form
Missing Basquiat Painting Found

An $8 million Jean-Michel Basquiat painting whose last known owner was a bankrupt Brazilian banker has been found in a Manhattan warehouse, The Associated Press reported. Federal prosecutors filed papers seeking to seize the 1982 work, “Hannibal,” which was valued at $100 on a customs declaration form when it arrived by courier from London at Kennedy Airport after apparently being smuggled out of Brazil. Prosecutors are seeking to help Brazilian authorities claim the painting, whose last known owner was Edemar Cid Ferreira, former owner of Banco Santos and one of Brazil’s foremost art collectors. The bank went bankrupt in 2005, leaving debts of more than $1 billion. Mr. Ferreira was convicted of money laundering and bank fraud, and sentenced to 21 years in prison; a Brazilian court ordered seizure of $20 million to $30 million worth of his art, saying it was bought with proceeds of illegal schemes, but “Hannibal” was missing.

Skateboard hating cop caught on video for 2nd temper tantrum

Salvatore Rivieri, the Baltimore police officer who can be seen in a YouTube video wearing cute shorts and knocking a skinny 14-year-old skateboarder to the ground (David posted about it yesterday) is the star of another video that's recently surfaced.
This time he confronts Billy Friebele, an artist from Washington D.C., who was videotaping at the Harbor last summer.

Friebele told ABC2 [a Baltimore TV station] he was taping the reactions of passersby to a box he was moving with a remote controlled car. Officer Friebele is seen on tape kicking the box off of the car and then kicking the car. The officer then orders Friebele to leave the area.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the video on the ABC2 site so I don't know if Officer Rivieri is wearing those shorts. Link

Patrick Seale, "NATO's Afghan Quagmire"--2/8/08
This article is a week old, but still highly relevant.

NATO's Afghan Quagmire
By Patrick Seale
8 February 2008

NATO -- the North Atlantic Treaty Organization -- is the world's most powerful military alliance. It has two million men under its command, a thousand helicopters and countless other military resources.  Yet it is facing failure, if not actual defeat, in Afghanistan. Why?
The answer is simple. The Afghan war was misconceived from the very start. It was decided in rage and haste by Washington, without proper thought or planning, in response to al-Qaida's 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States.
Instead of patiently tracking down al-Qaida's leaders by police and counter-terrorist methods, the United Sates launched an all-out war against Afghanistan with the declared goal not only of smashing Al-Qaida, but also the Taliban regime which, willingly or unwillingly, was giving it sanctuary.
