Judy writes from Zimbabwe!
Dear Chris,
This looks really interesting. Thank you SO much. When I told you I'm not
on the web in Bulawayo I wasn't being strictly accurate. I can actually get
through to it via my
account in Cape Town but don't do so often because of the expense. But
tonight in off peak time I shall certainly sign up.

I was complaining about inflation here. We have elections on March 31,
already comprehensively rigged with hundreds of thousands of dead people on
the roll and lots of Zanu eager to vote on their behalf. Yesterday it was
announced that war veterans, an integral part now of Zanu's terror machine,
are to be awarded a hefty rise in their pensions of over 1000%. They go up
to $3 million a month. Chiefs and village headmen who control the communal
lands where the bulk of the rural population live are also getting (this is
all unbudgeted for) a rise and about 6000 former detainees (held before
Independence) are to get a gift of $10 million each - paid for by us, not
Zanu.

Inflation? It's going to be difficult just to PRINT enough money for all
this (no thought of earning it) and in the meanwhile hospitals, clinics,
schools, roads, people continue collapsing.
Thank you Chris, very much indeed, for what looks like a marvellous gift.
Love to you all
Judy

Syntax of a Pristine Language

Language is a characteristic human creation. It is a way of both interpreting the world and imposing order on the world. Consequently, some linguists and psychologists view grammar as a peep-hole into the workings of the human mind.

The problem is few opportunities arise to study a language that is "uncorrupted" by contact with other tongues or is not the product of cultures mingling, such as Creole. A group of American and Israeli researchers, however, think they have found one such pristine language.

The subject-object-verb structure in the Bedouin sign language is the most common word order found in languages generally. There is also evidence it is the structure found in the earliest languages.

The appearance of such a clear-cut rule early in the evolution of a language "is rare empirical verification of the unique proclivity of the human mind for structuring a communication system along grammatical lines," the authors write.

What If (It Was All a Big Mistake)?
By Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)
t r u t h o u t | Statement

Wednesday 26 January 2005
Delivered to the U.S. House of Representatives.

America's policy of foreign intervention, while still debated in the
early 20th century, is today accepted as conventional wisdom by both
political parties. But what if the overall policy is a colossal mistake, a
major error in judgment? Not just bad judgment regarding when and where to
impose ourselves, but the entire premise that we have a moral right to
meddle in the affairs of others? Think of the untold harm done by years of
fighting - hundreds of thousands of American casualties, hundreds of
thousands of foreign civilian casualties, and unbelievable human and
economic costs. What if it was all needlessly borne by the American people?
If we do conclude that grave foreign policy errors have been made, a very
serious question must be asked: What would it take to change our policy to
one more compatible with a true republic's goal of peace, commerce, and
friendship with all nations? Is it not possible that Washington's admonition
to avoid entangling alliances is sound advice even today?

But the bigger question is:

What if I'm right, or even partially right, and we urgently need to
change course in our foreign policy for the sake of our national and
economic security, yet no one pays attention?

For that a price will be paid. Is it not worth talking about?
