End-Timers & Neo-Cons
The End of Conservatives

by Dr. Paul Craig Roberts; January 19, 2005

I remember when friends would excitedly telephone to report that Rush Limbaugh or G. Gordon Liddy had just read one of my syndicated columns over the air. That was before I became a critic of the US invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration, and the neoconservative ideologues who have seized control of the US government.</script>

Because of the triumph of delusional "new conservatives" and the demise of the liberal media, this war is different from the Vietnam war. As more Americans are killed and maimed in the pointless carnage, more Americans have a powerful emotional stake that the war not be lost and not be in vain. Trapped in violence and unable to admit mistake, a reckless administration will escalate.

The rapidly collapsing US dollar is hard evidence that the world sees the US as bankrupt. Flight from the dollar as the reserve currency will adversely impact American living standards, which are already falling as a result of job outsourcing and offshore production. The US cannot afford a costly and interminable war.

Falling living standards and inability to impose our will on the Middle East will result in great frustrations that will diminish our country.

Once Iraq is officially stamped a democracy and American soldiers
withdraw to a series of permanent bases or behind the walls of the largest
and most fortified US embassy in the world, the Strauss-cons will have

Although whether they will be allowed to get away with this giant con

From Riverbend http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/ :

My favorite question during the interview was when the reporter asked him
(Ghazi, the alleged Iraqi President) what he thought of Chalabi possibly
being arrested. Ghazi looked flustered and a little bit unsure (apparently
he hasn't been watching CNN while abroad). He actually told her that the
person who claimed Chalabi was wanted was probably speaking his own
"personal" opinion and that it wasn't representative of the 'government'-
never mind the person in question was the Minister of Defense. To be
perfectly fair, he didn't mention which government he was referring to- I
couldn't tell if he was talking about the US, the UK or the current group of
Puppets. He claimed that for Chalabi to be arrested there needed to be
'proof' he had actually done something wrong... the Interpol wanting him
really wasn't enough.Read more... )

There's an almost palpable anxiety in the air these last couple of weeks and
it's beginning to wear on people- fuel shortages, water shortages and a lack
of electricity. It's like the first days of the war all over again.

'Last Don' Reported to Be First One to Betray Mob
By WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM

n a remarkable turn in the long, sometimes colorful history of law enforcement's fight against organized crime, the imprisoned boss of the Bonanno crime family has begun cooperating with federal authorities and has told them about another top Mafia member's proposal to kill a prosecutor, law enforcement officials said yesterday.

The cooperation of one of the official bosses of New York's five Mafia clans is all the more extraordinary because it involves Joseph C. Massino, 62, who was known as the last don, an Old World stalwart who clung to the fading values of honor and omertà, the Mafia's code of silence.

Benjamin Brafman, a lawyer who has represented Mr. Basciano in the past, said he was not handling the case unsealed yesterday or another pending case against him. Mr. Basciano has not yet been arraigned on the new charges and a lawyer for him could not be located yesterday.

Mr. Massino's current lawyer, Ms. Edwards, in a letter sent Wednesday to the judge handling Mr. Massino's cases, said she sought to adjourn his sentencing date and complained she could not locate her client.

Mr. Massino had been moved to a prison in Manhattan, possibly because prosecutors had planned to unseal the indictment yesterday.

Ex-G.I. Writes About Use of Sex in Guantánamo Interrogations
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

AN JUAN, P.R., Jan. 27 (AP) - Female interrogators tried to break male Muslim detainees at the United States prison camp in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, by sexually touching them, by wearing miniskirts and thong underwear, and, in one case, by smearing a Saudi man's face with red ink, which he was led to believe was menstrual blood, according to part of a draft manuscript written by a former Army sergeant. Lt. Col. James Marshall, a spokesman for the United States Southern Command, said about 20 percent of the guards at Guantánamo were women. He would not say how many of the interrogators were women.

"U.S. forces treat all detainees and conduct all interrogations, wherever they may occur, humanely and consistent with U.S. legal obligations, and in particular with legal obligations prohibiting torture," Colonel Marshall said on Wednesday.

The Return of Cream

Cream, which disbanded in 1968, has announced a series of reunion shows. Eric Clapton on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass and Ginger Baker on drums will return on May 2, 3, 5 and 6 to the Royal Albert Hall in London, where they played their last full-length concerts together. From 1966 to 1968, Cream merged blues-rock and psychedelia, reaching back to Robert Johnson and taking off in long, frenetic jams. The group reunited in 1993 for a brief set when it was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. JON PARELES

When the Talk Is Terse, a Twitch Speaks Volumes
By STEPHEN HOLDEN

Grimly austere barely begins to describe the atmosphere of dread that seeps through "Fear X" like a toxic mist. The movie's ominous mood is deepened by Brian Eno and J. Peter Schwalm's ambient background score, which haunts the movie with faraway groans and rattles.

If "Fear X," the American filmmaking debut of the Swedish director Nicolas Winding Refn, promises far more drama than it finally delivers, its glumness never abates. Whether contemplating the shabby cottages in a snow-swept Wisconsin suburb or scanning the flatlands of Montana, the camera, which stealthily follows the protagonist's suspicious eyes wherever he looks, imagines danger crouching in every shadow.
